The City of Wyoming, a vibrant, diverse community of 78,000 residents, is seeking a City Attorney to join its leadership team.
The City Attorney is appointed by City Council and serves as the chief legal advisor to the City. Responsible for providing professional and technical legal services to the City Council, City Manager, all departments, and boards and commissions, the City Attorney represents the City in legal proceedings and partners with departments and external legal counsel in areas such as bonding, labor, liability, workers’ compensation, code enforcement, and Freedom of Information Act requests. The City Attorney renders legal opinions and prepares contracts, ordinances, resolutions, leases, and other documents. Additionally, the City Attorney is responsible for the function and management of the Attorney’s Office, which includes a Deputy City Attorney and Administrative Assistant.
Candidates considering application to the City Attorney position must possess a J.D. from a school of law accredited by the American Bar Association and ten years of experience in the practice of law, with three years of experience representing a public entity preferred. Qualified candidates must be in good standing with the State Bar of Michigan and be skilled in legal research and the ability to organize, interpret, and apply legal principles and knowledge to complex legal issues, specifically federal and state law as they apply to municipal work. Attending meetings and presenting to public bodies is required as part of this position.
