Buck Creek Braille Trail to Provide Innovative Experience for Visually Impaired

Wyoming, Michigan, July 25, 2017 - The City of Wyoming, its Parks and Recreation Department, and the Kent District Library for Blind & Physically Handicapped (LBPH) are partnering together to provide a family-friendly, accessible display at Buck Creek Nature Preserve during the month of August. The Buck Creek Braille Trail is a concept based on StoryWalk™, where pages of a book are placed on signs along a trail for people to enjoy while taking a walk. The partnership takes this idea further by including clear overlays with Braille text on each sign so trail users that are blind or visually impaired can engage in the story along with sighted users.

The Buck Creek Braille Trail will launch on August 1, featuring the book Grumpy Bird by Jeremy Tankard, and will run until the end of the month. Buck Creek Nature Preserve was chosen based on the accessibility of its trail, as well as the City’s recent addition of accessible crosswalk signs at the intersection of 44th Street and Burlingame Avenue. The Braille Trail starts at the Buck Creek Nature Center’s parking lot, located at 4269 Burlingame Avenue, and proceeds west along the trail towards Lemery Park. It is also accessible from the neighborhood at the Cypress Street nature trail connector path.

“We are excited to partner with KDL and their Library for Blind and Physically Handicapped on this innovative program that encourages reading and recreation for all,” said Jack Poll, Mayor of the City of Wyoming. “The City of Wyoming is committed to being a community that provides opportunities for individuals of all abilities.”

“We are pleased to partner with the City to increase Braille awareness in our community, while providing a fun, nature-centered activity for the people of all ages and abilities to enjoy,” says Michelle Roossien, LBPH Specialist for Kent District Library.

Housed within the Wyoming Library at 3350 Michael Avenue SW, KDL’s Library for the Blind & Physically Handicapped provides free books and magazines in accessible formats to persons with visual or physical impairments in Kent, Ionia, and Montcalm Counties.
