Today at approximately 5:23pm, Wyoming police officers and firefighters responded to Battjes Park, 1655 Blandford SW, on a report of two swimmers in distress in the park pond. Officers were nearby and when they arrived on scene, a good Samaritan was pulling two young brothers, 10 & 11 years old, from the water. A police officer carried the younger brother, who was unconscious but breathing, up a walking path to meet EMS for treatment. Other officers began CPR on the older brother, who was not breathing and had no pulse. Sadly, their resuscitative efforts were not successful, and the older brother was pronounced dead at the scene. The younger brother was transported to a local hospital and at this writing is said to be improving and is expected to survive.
At this point in the investigation, we believe the boys, from Grand Rapids, were at the park with family and entered the pond purposefully to swim. They were not wearing any flotation devices. We are not identifying any of the parties at this time to ensure that all appropriate family notifications are made. The investigation is on-going.
